An
insider’s guide for what to do in Alcalá de Henares
|
There are
so many intriguing places in Alcalá de Henares. We have tried to sum up
a few of the ones we like the best so that you can spend a marvelous few
days in Alcalá and visit the most interesting places.
Monday
The first day
of the week is the toughest, and for that reason, the best way to start
the day is to regain your stamina with a good dose of hot chocolate with
churros. For 1,75 €
you can
enjoy this delight at the churrería
Cibeles (very close to the
school) or at Mailu
(Plaza Cervantes). Also there is nothing
better than going for some tapas before lunch, we recommend going to
either La
Taberna de Rusty (1’85 €) or
Hidalgo
(1 € la caña) in the city center.
This last place has a great
tapa called "majada
de atún con tomate"
which is finger licking good.
Tuesday
Tuesday is a good day to visit the museums in the city, because
Monday they are all closed. You simply must visit the Museum home of
Miguel de Cervantes. You will see there a large collection of bibliographic
references about his work: El Quijote. Leaving the museum you can
go shopping right there on Calle Mayor or visit one of the Shopping
centers: El Corte Inglés (bus line 11), El Centro Comercial
El Val and Alcampo (bus line 5).
Wednesday
There are a multitude of restaurants in this city, but if you want to
savor the best steak you should go to the Fogón de Amós (Calle
Rico Home). If you love roast chicken you can't miss El Pollo de
Alcalá (Vía Complutense)
Wednesday is also the day when movie theaters offer
discounts on the price of your ticket. There are 3 theaters in Alcala:
one at the Plaza Los Santos Niños, another at the shopping
center El Val and a third at La Dehesa Centro Comercial. After enjoying a
film there is nothing better than going to dinner at a typical mesón
: Las Cuevas de Rocinante on Calle Mayor, where you'll find red
checked table cloths, a variety of raciónes, the best coffee
made in a puchero and fresh baked bread.
Jueves
You
could go to have a beer at the new bar in Alcalá: La
Amstelería (on
Calle Mayor).
You can literally serve yourself because there is a beer tap at each
table. 6
€ a liter of beer includes a tapa.
To keep yourself fit after all this eating, you can go to play soccer
at the sports center: Polideportivo El Val. If you've still got
energy you can go out to a dance place at night, such as the famous
and popular Gabana
where groups of foreign students gather. |

Friday
Thank God it's
Friday! After classes are over students and professors go to La Media
Pinta a bar near the school where you can have some tapas. For 2 euros
you can have a beer and some potatoes accompanied by a variety of 4
different sauces. Follow up with a nice walk through the city center to
Calle Mayor. Recommended for lunch is Tapelía (calle Ramón y
Cajal) where you can choose from a variety of typical rice dishes and
paellas, or Tony Romas (Calle Tinte) where you can enjoy
delicious ribs. If you're not yet ready to go home, you can continue the
fun singing at the karaoke at La Champanería (Boisán
neighborhood).
On the weekends you
can find a mix a people at the bars and dance places of the city. There is
an area of town called La Zona which is the are where you find the
most frequented bars and dance places. It is located in the historic city
center near calle Vqueras, Rico Homme, etc. There you can have a few
drinks, try some tapas, and play a game of table top soccer or darts.
S aturday
Many Saturdays you can enjoy a
concert at the Municipal Auditorium or at the discoteque MAH
(on Calle Beatriz Galindo). It's great to try going to the Indalo
for their tapa of paella with your drink for 1,65 €. In the
afternoon at the Cuevas de Antolín you can have various raciones
for 6 €, such as sausage and potatoes, calamar, croquetas, and more.
At night your best choice is La Zona.
Sunday

If
the weekend has been nonstop, this is the day to step back and
relax a bit. You can have an ice cream at the Plaza Cervantes
while enjoying the sun, or a milk shake at la
Tertulia or a coffe at
bar
Continental or
Hemisferio (all
found on or near Calle
Mayor). You
can also take a stroll down Calle Mayor and browse the improvised
Sunday market selling all types of things including earing,
jewlery, clothes, books.
All week long there
are expositions of art at the Casa
de la Entrevista (plaza Santos
Niños)
or
Capilla del Oidor (Plza Cervantes) which are free to
the public.
Also some bars and coffee shops also have art expositions such
as La
Galería (Calle San Felipe Neri)

If
you are in Alcalá in warm weather you can take advantage of the many
green areas of the city, for example spending a day with friends
outdoors. The best places for this are Parque natural and La
Chopera (towards Gurugú) where you can prepare your own barbecue
even.
