Each year on April 23 the King of Spain visits Alcalá de Henares to
present the "Nobel Prize" of Spanish literature in the Paraninfo of the
University of Alcalá de Henares. You could be strolling through the Book
fair this day and see the royal committee arrive, and will observe them
accompanied by great Spanish and Latin American authors.
King Juan Carlos I, presented Antionio
Garmoneda with the Cervantes Prize on April 23, 2007 in an Official Act
in the Paraninfo of the university of Alcala de Henares. The King
pronounced a discourse in which he honored the writers literary
trajectory, and the works of Miguel de Cervantes.
Antonio Gamoneda -born in Oviedo in
1931, but lived in Leon for many years - received this prize in honor of
his life work. The event was presided over by the King and Queen of
Spain, also attending the ceremony were the Minister of Culture,
Carmen Calvo, and the president of Spain, José Luis
Rodríguez Zapatero.
The Cervantes prize coincides with the
Book Fair which includes a traditional uninterrupted reading of Don
Quixote in the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid, which Gamoneda began
at 6 pm.
Including Garmoneda, sixteen Spaniards and 15 Latin-American authors
have been distinguished with this honor, among them only 2 women the
Spanish author María Zambrano, in 1988, and the Cuban poet Dulce
María Loynaz, in 1992.

Receta: "Potaje Castellano" |
Potaje Castellano:
Ingredients
1/2 Kg. chick peas
1/2 Kg. spinach
2 carrots
1 potato
2 cloves of garlic
2 laurel leaves
1 onion
1 teaspoon of paprika
1 tablespoon of flour
Olive oil
Preparation
On the previous day place the check peas in warm water to soak
along with the laurel leaves and a teaspoon of baking soda.
Chop the carrots, half an onion and the spinach. Put water in
a pot and when it boils add the chick peas, chopped
vegetables and the other laurel leaf. Cook at medium heat
for 3 hours. If you have less time you can use a pressure
cooker to considerably reduce the cooking time.
In a frying pan fry the other
half onion chopped in cubes along with the garlic cut in
slices. When it is done add the paprika, flour and a cup of
the liquid from the chick peas. When well mixed add all
ingredients to the pot with the chick peas mixture and let
it cook 5 minutes.
Serve with bits of hard boiled egg sprinkled on top.
